Normally, I don't reply to these. But I have unending sympathy for fellow /a/nons. So ask away.

In regards to your question, in my view its a matter of knowing who you are and what do you want. The worst thing that can happen to you is that you have no idea who you are or what you want to be. Just look at the current generation: raised being told to go to "good" college, get a "good" degree, then get a "good" job ("good" being a reputable college, a marketable degree, and white collar job, respectively). Rarely are they encouraged to seriously consider what it is they want to be, what do they want to do in life, and so forth. So they end freaking out by mid sophomore year, choose a liberal arts degree, and graduate college with not that much direction in life and unsure who they are and what they want to do. A good number think they should pursue money. Which makes sense, since people readily equate that with progress in society and advancement. Unfortunately, money is just a means. People forget that.

Question for you: what do you write about? Fiction, analysis (political, economic, financial), technical?

First, do plenty of reading. Learn the basic terms and all:
http://www.investopedia.com/university/stocks/

I also suggest reading Graham's "The Intelligent Investor," which is sort of the Bible for long-term investment. You can then pick and choose from the books provided by >>1959859, though personally I think most of the "tips and tricks" books just repackage common sense. More important I would say is developing your investment philosophy.

Set up a paper trading account (ie stock market simulator) to get some practice in. I suggest the one available in Ivestopedia, or the one provided by Marketwatch.

For initial trades, I would suggest the Robinhood app. $0 commissions, though minimal research tools and limited choices.

Some initial safe buys are index funds, which track the market as a whole. SPY for the S&P500 and VOO (Vanguard's small cap index fund). Mind you, this is for your money to grow whilst you learn and study.

If you want to trade though, ask someone else. It's not my cup of tea.
