Now I work at a large company
It had all the ESG trimmings
Got the "employee resource group" bullshit for every special interest
Got all the company chat channels with minorities and women whining and congratulating each-other for bravery
Enter the layoffs last spring
Recruiters (mostly blacks and women) were all laid off except for a select few
Slack message goes out from management noting that we're restructuring ESG and DEI
Team leads will be responsible for achieving DEI goals
Only team leads don't give a shit and just want to ship code so they hire (and fire) according to ability
Now this isn't the case with a centralized DEI body that can ignore results and create a negative externality so long as they hit their diversity quotas
Go check the DEI slack channels a few months after the layoffs
Unbelievable shift in tone. Channels used to be full of chatter and people discussing activism goals and demands to make of the company.
Every diversity-based group is empty.
Most of the members of these groups are inactive (fired/laid off)
You start to realize that DEI is a luxury, not a necessity
A few months later we had some company-wide meeting and someone asked about our diversity stats.
Now we're like 80% white/(((white))) with a few dozen asians and pajeets
Urge to ask "if diversity is our strength, why did we let it decrease when the market was tough instead of increasing it?", but I resist.
