well, they're not "just" car companies, they're car companies that can charge a premium as a luxury product (for mercedes) or as a semi-luxury, semi-safetyfirst product (volvo).

as more & more of the world gets to the stage where they can make their own basics - and china/india make plenty of cheap basic cars at this point - and more & more people get to where they afford more than the basics, all the profits will be in luxury, especially for brands that are aspirational across the 3rd world, and mercedes is in that position.

3rdworlders dont really give a shit about sports cars. they want a luxury living room on wheels, they want it super comfy, and they want it absolutely reliable.

if porsche makes another suv like the cayenne/macan, but makes it *actually* high end - 200k plus - and gives it unique, masculine styling - unlike the momcars that the cayenne/macan are - then they might have something.

these are not my personal opinions, i hate suvs, but this is the way things are going imo.
