I know this will sound dumb but how do I do stuff in my corporate office job, that isn't part of my normal responsibilities, that will seem promotion worthy?

I have some vague things dreamed up, but ultimately I feel like in trying to do anything I will just be embarrassed by the friction that comes with interacting with others while admitting you know little. So for example, I am thinking of talking to a new supplier about getting a cheaper service for my company but I don't know what the exact technical specifications of the service are, or whether my boss thinks renewing with the current supplier is a formality, etc. At some point asking others a lot of questions means that they're kind of doing the hard work for you. And similarly with anything that seems big.

It seems that the alternative to that is to be a networker, work on pointless committees and diversity initiatives, give pointless speeches

How do I cope with the fact that I'll never be an investment banker or have the pay of a lawyer? There are tonnes of people all on hundreds of thousands of pounds per year. Those, plus medicine, are really the only way to live comfortably in London.

I'm 29 and only on £30k.
