It's understated how cheap Japan is, rally. Sure, living in center Tokyo or Osaka isn't cheap, but other than that, just a few commute away and it's cheaper. Way more than the equivalent in a big US city or western EU capital. Don't even get me started on the countryside. I could very well see myself living the comfy NEET life in the Seto Inland Sea area. I fell in love with the area. Comfy, quiet, cheap, chill.

I just want to retire to countryside Japan. Everything is just so cheap over there, it's insane.

Sounds about right. I feel like I *could* live with ~700K, but I'd be worried a tad too much over the principal during market downturns.
The biggest uncertainty is healthcare costs. Right now it's basically zero as far as I'm concerned. But that won't stay true forever.
