They can stretch it a little here, and a little there, but otherwise it has to be backed by either exports, labor or resources. American dollars long ago ascend past such mortal concepts, but a world reserve currency backed by nothing, has certain limitations. One being that it has to be the least socialist dollar in existence, lest the World wake up to their work efforts directly subsidising the American people, rather than just the American War and Corporate Machine.
