the trillions of UST banks hold are not marked to market since they're assumed to be hold through maturity and so far treasury has 100% confidence of never defaulting on their bonds
with treasury projected to default on some of their non-marketable bonds, this will spike the yields of marketable bonds since there's non-zero risk of treasury defaulting now, this will also force the bond price to be marked to market instantly creating losses in the trillions because what's the point of holding bonds until maturity when the bond issuer is projected to be long bankrupt at the point of maturity?
