1) loans should be regional, people should only go to universities within commuting distance to discourage taking on huge debts
2) tax systems need to be reformed to give more tax writeoffs to parents to keep their student kids at home, writeoffs should be extended to 35 to account for grad school and phd students
3) more tax credits
4) legal reprecussions for parents taking money intended for university (4050 for the adult dependent tax credit, 1000-2500 for the AOTC, 2000 for the LLC and all writeoffs for things like books for a total of more than 10,000 dollars in tax credits and writeoffs in a single year) and not spending it on their kids.

Number 4 is probably the most important, there are people who graduate late because their parents tell them it's all 'okay' to do so because the parents are leeching tax credits meant to pay for university into their own pockets so boomer bob or xoomer todd can afford a new car or some shit like that. The system was designed under three assumptions- that people would go to universities they could afford (26k a year in tuition becomes 13k if you live at home, so you'd only have 52k in debt instead of 104k and the 10k+ in tax credits your parents get would knock that down to 12k, plus additional tax writeoffs for them paying down any interest you accrue, plus the fact you yourself can work during summer, get 4k and that's 16k over 4 years which means you would owe nothing on 52k in debt), parents would help their kids with the government's help instead of stealing from them, and that universities would remain publicly funded- red states like florida don't have this problem, republicans kept public funding high. Blue states fucked up.

The system is broken because retarded boomers broke it by telling their kids to party it up, gen xers are continuing the trend because they are retarded.

Parents WERE NOT supposed to pocket 10k a year in uni tax credits, that was supposed to go to their kids.
