I was a cart pusher so I mostly work outside. What management told me is “if it’s new, target property, wallet or phone, I return it to guest service. Everything else you can keep” and that’s how it’s been for 7 years, I’ve found $100 bill, a computer monitor, headphones, random cds, a loose switch game (we didn’t sell that one in store), a ps2 with games, a Sony Bravia 60in picrel (someone dumped it in our lot), old books etc. I’ve never had any trouble but recently I found a water bottle that was broken ( didn’t have the clasp) and a notebook with some scribbles in it (it didn’t have any identifiable features or markings) so like many of the other trinkets I’ve found over the years I kept it. A month later I get called into the office and told I stole stuff. We recently got new security so the guy is taking shit seriously apparently the water bottle was target product as was the notebook. Both were clearly used so it wasn’t target property anymore but they didn’t care and after 8 or so years of working there I was fired. I pointed out that I literally bring the water bottle to work every day and they could’ve just told since I clearly didn’t intend to steal but they weren’t having it. I am worried I’ll get sentenced but the amount may be so little and/or it’s so clear it wasn’t intentional that at most I’ll get community service if it comes to that.
