The fact that "junk" is being melted everyday is the reason I buy real coins instead of bullion most of the time.

Most people don't realize how tight the silver market already is in terms of supply, but smaller industrial firms will literally buy anything they can get delivered in bulk within a few dollars of spot to melt.

Copper is being melted too, even though it is apparently illegal - its definitely happening.
