Having $1m in straight cash doing nothing is pretty ridiculous, aside from having available money to cover expenses + emergencies most of your money should be working for you in one way or another.

If I had 1m I would probably move a fair chunk into safer investments and eventually pay cash for a house. Being mortage free would be excellent, most of my income can be invested, I can take holidays when I feel like it and be happy. Buying a house is a pretty expensive transaction so I am not in a hurry to do that despite the massive cultural pressure in aus.

So many people my age rush to get a nosebleed level mortage and kneecap themselves financially and have to either eat rice and beans or just go into more and more debt, I say fuck that. Keeping up with the Joneses is a ponzi scheme designed to keep you poor.
