own the stock before they have an exdiv date, then broker should deposit money into your account once the div-payday is announced (exdiv date and the day you get paid are usually a few weeks apart)

look up exdivdate, record date, payment date, and declare date, if you need to know the fine details

dividends .com has everything if you search your stocks on there
not sure if ive ever heard of a brokerage that doesnt show if a stock is dividend stock or not

basic google search of any stock you are interested in would work too

friendly reminder that when you think you are discovering something overlooked about the ex-div date, you are wrong, everyone knows it already

someone else has already thought of it and told dozens of their pals already, 10/10 times

check options prices before and after ex div dates and see for yourself

1.) buy a stock that pays dividends (WM and LMT are good ones)
2.) hold the stock through the ex div date
3.) continue holding the stock for another 3 months, through the next exdiv date
4.) keep doing this until you die (or retire)

but it isnt going to take much. and there are more potential black swan events than ever before

>It can't be that simple. What's the catch here?
their div yield might not stay that high forever, and if the stock price is decaying overall, you might get squeezed out a little in a reverse split (or with a few reverse splits)

also, be mindful of where that dividend money is coming from

>Are distributed dividends prorated by the amount of time spent holding the stock since last distribution, or is it possible with the correct amount of diligence to just buy a dividend stock the day before its dividends are projected to distribute, take the distribution and run?
literally everys single person who has heard of dividends has thought of this

people who try it for the first time are already priced in

stocks drop by the same(give or take) amount a share as the dividend payout on exdivdate

the only reason that dip isnt exactly the same size as the dividend payout is because of meme magic (broker firms, drip options, other neglegable financial bs)

look it up, stocks usually peak a few days before the exdivdate, assuming theres no market wide bump that cancels the effect out
