can be used to prove that you had information first, if for example someone tries to screw you over after you shared information with them. sure there are non-disclosure agreements for businesses but all that legal hassle isn't something you always want to go through if you just want to get credit for something you were intending to release for free to the world, but your partner is trying to take credit and pass off the idea as his own.
