The larger the bar the harder it will be to sell (obviously). I initially bought 1oz coins, but am starting to switch to larger bars like 10oz instead to lower premiums and still be easy to liquidate.

For gold, I stick to the cheapest sovereigns, gives some reassurance of authenticity and some have security features already (example, Britannia, Canadian leaf). The US gold coins have no security features, yet they have a higher premium, which makes no sense to me.
