>I'm looking at buying pic related (cleaned) for a decent discount ($80 off AU grade, $40 off XF). my main worry isn't the cleaning itself, but that the receipt will show that it's cleaned.

I don't mind cleaning if it was done skillfully, common date circulated gold is basically just old constitutional bullion so if you get it cheap you're doing fine. You don't need to transfer the receipt with the coin so I don't see any problem there.

It's a different realm but basically every Ancient coin has been cleaned. I've gotten pretty good using fine tools and a 20x binocular microscope to clean the crust and crap off Ancient bronze and silver coins, looking for cheap ugly dirty coins that experience indicates is high-grade under the encrustation is a fun way to collect good stuff cheap.

If you have anything you're interested in I can take a look, and I can point you to excellent honest eBay sellers, but can't instill the ability to tell authentic from forgery; that takes hands-on experience.

Just wanted to add that there is nothing wrong with modern "numismatic" bullion coin, much is quite beautiful and I understand the personal appeal, but in my observation and experience since the mid 90s such items really don't ever capture the interest of the more serious and sophisticated collectors you NEED to see growth in your acquisitions.

For me a good analogy is/was the NASCAR-Coca-Cola and Christmas Polar Bear coke paraphernalia of the last few decades. Basic-bitch entry-level garbage made specifically to be collected will never pan out, even though there are indeed serious Coke (and Racing) collectors. What the coke collectors want are the 100+ year old hand-blown bottles and bright beautiful porcelain-over-steel advertising signage. They will never give a rat's fart about some bullshit 1996 Christmas ornament.

Same for numismatics. Don't buy the pretty convenient boxed up shilled-all-over-the-web modern coin unless you fully understand that it will never be regarded as much more than bullion. If you want to be serious about true numismatics you will need to dig below the surface and sift through the shiny chaff for the truly good stuff.

Thanks and sure, the crab coins are from the Greek city state of Akragas in Sicily, I have 2 of the ~8g didrachms, they just have an eagle on the reverse.

The 3-leg (symbol is called a triskeles or triskelion) coins are extra awesome for me because I collect the ancient Greek and Roman lead sling bullets inscribed with designs and insults. Those silver staters depict a war-slinger with sling drawn overhead, pouch of lead bullets hanging off hip, and the triskelion symbol of the city state of Aspendos in field. The slinger mercenaries of Aspendos were well renowned and celebrated enough to be depicted on their coinage, and I managed to obtain a very rare 2,300 year old 28 gram lead sling bullet embossed with that same symbol and almost certainly used by the same soldiers honored on the coins. Badass. The other side shows 2 nude wrestlers grappling, commemorating a win for one of their men in the wrestling competition of one of the ancient olympic games; a homoerotic subject matter more fitting for plebbitors and of little personal interest.

I love ancient shit, no offense but people cooming over modern mass produced (yes, a 10 or 20k mintage is absolutely mass produced) modern memecoins just makes me sad, it's such a waste of money because literally no sophisticated collectors will ever want that crap, I try warning people not to get the equivalent of numismatic beanie babies but most people just don't get it and probably never will. More good stuff for me I guess.
