How does it compare to Rchain? Asking as a dev

I work in augmented reality and there are some BIM prototype projects. Well yes, I agree, for the verification process you have in mind, literally github is enough. Git also provides a chain of hashes of document additions.
Blockchain makes most sense with autonomous asset trasnfer, and those assets are either liquid currencies or licenses. For something like archetecuture design, which has comparitatively few contributers, all the consensus mechanisms conceved in the last 10 days are overblown. A bft (like NEO does it) will surely be enough. Nobody gains much out of faking contributions when designing a building, you have no unknown participants. Even for tracking like Waltonchain does it, I don't think you need tech from the last 10 years.

If I were to write a coin (something I can actually do), how to play it in a way that takes off. Assuming the project is interesting but doesn't really need a coin.

I remember discussing blockchain for voting in 2013 with my network affine friends over a beer. I also just bought in June 2017. Still made 15x and I'm confident we can go another 5x in a short while.
