Ok, Nevada has some incredible mineralization belts, places like Virginia City and dozens of other smaller camps that only lasted a few years. For placer gold, your options are limited, as its often whats called "dry wash" ground where there is limited water. Hard rock is plentiful but often still owned by private holders. Use https://thediggings.com/ to find info on your states regs and mineral hotspots close to you. I can go further into details but it gets complicated fast.

well thats half true, Henry Comstock, the guy who lied his way into owning part of the Lode that would be named after him had mined lead before in Idaho, so thats why he knew what the blue gray galena ore at Virginia City was and how high grade it was. The gold miners were all placer men, and not good ones either, they were all failures from California and other successive rushes.
