Is it better to pay off a car loan early, or to invest the money into an S&P500 index fund?

Some pros for paying it off early:
>reduce debt, thereby improving credit score and personal freedom
>once the car is paid off you will have excess cash flow for investing/spending how you see fit
>own your vehicle
>you will pay less interest

Cons:
>you could most likely earn a better return with the index fund
>the longer you have the loan the more inflation will reduce the actual value of the loan
>keeping the loan helps build credit history

I'm curious what /biz/ thinks about this.
