As our social understanding grows yet the basics are forgotten to death and time more and better systems to compound that knowledge must arise. A very long time ago somebody realized inheritely the nature of this, and locked away their own knowledge. The compounding effect of such knowledge that was privatized for all intents is so huge you cannot begin to grasp it now. This is why they do control you, and this is why you should care.
