I'd say the best candidate for a next Monero would look like ARK or Decred with added privacy features. ZenCash would also qualifies if it was not for the ZCash parameters. A anonymous coin on its own isn't anything new or special in 2018. We have Monero and that's it, if it fails ZCash is there as backup. You won't find a coin with more experienced and skilled Cryptographers working on it than ZCash and Monero. And that is pretty much at the heart of what counts for privacy.

The issue with Monero is the main selling point: Total anonymity. More than any other coin, there is a psychological factor against investing in a coin governments would have a raging regulative hard on for. You can always use Monero to guarantee yourself absolute privacy. But as an investment it appears a whole lot riskier than Bitcoin, or plenty of alts. Monero's privacy functions as flawlessly at 0.001$ as 10$k per coin, and while it is good at anonymity, it is not a good store of value.
