A possible goal he sees is the breaking off of the Russian ethno-linguistic regions to the east and possible along the black sea area. He sees the belief that he wants to recreate greater Russia as highly unlikely and that he is acting according to what he told NATO and EU leaders at the Bucharest in 2008 that Ukraine is a redline and Russia will act to secure its national interests in Ukraine if the west proceeds to make it a member of NATO and EU. Other thinkers like Zeihan think that he is going for greater Russia and that he is acting according to the geopolitical necessity Russia has always had and will continue to push to secure the geopolitical weakspots Russia has in Europe as their demographics are going down the gurgler an this is the last generation that Russia can act as a military power anyway. Both analysis still see that Russia and the West view defeat as not an option and that the nuclear threshold may be crossed.
