Leader based is more like a small senate where everyone has to talk to every other member of the group (takes too long) and Avalanche is more like a stadium where everyone is randomly polled over multiple rounds and it takes less than a second to make a decision. and surprisingly this scales and works extremely well.
basically Avalanche is the consensus machine for soon hundreds of thousands of custom build Subnets and Blockchains that can all seamlessly interoperate with each other thanks to Avalanche Warp Messaging, it doesnt really compete with fantom, its more likely that fantom will become a Subnet in this new world of "Blockchain as a Service" that Ava Labs is building.
Few people understand the potential.
