Because when you go to your broker and he says you have a share. What you REALLY have is a claim to the share. It's yours in the sense you can demand it from the broker. But do they 'really' have it? No they don't. They've probably lent it out to someone who shorted it off to someone.... who lent it out to someone who shorted it again.
