How do employeers check your background?

My resume is not a lie but there are some start and quit dates I am honestly not exactly sure of. And one company I worked for I went to work for a subsidiary of them as a contractor for over a year then back to being an employee, and I just have that as one entry.

I have been getting interviews at big name places and they have been going really well, but then they pass on me. This happens right after I get the feeling they are doing the background check.

Where can I go pay someone to do a background check on me and give me what they find so I can make my resume fit what they see?
