That's interesting, but are we talking about regular house bathroom or tiny student apartments?
I took the train from Tokyo to Hakone and you see many many houses, just regular one family size houses, I think they should have a little bit bigger of a bathroom than an apartment in a big city.
In anime reference, I mean the kind of houses you have in a setting where they are still young and the childhood gf lives next door to the main character, and later in the series they move to the big soulless city.

Pic related is already what I mean, there's just a soaking tub but adjacent there's some space where you can wash up, but ideally you could stand and was there.
In small apartments you would have to fit the toilet into the same room to save space, but for humidity, ventilation and hygiene it would be preferential to have a separate room for the toilet.

Personally I prefer to wait until it's filled up, heated to the proper temperate and just jump right in.
