Part of the beauty of buybacks is that smart companies can buy back opportunistically when their shares are undervalued. Then they can pause the program when shares become relatively overvalued temporarily.

If buybacks became a prominent metric in statistics lists, you might get a bunch of morons chasing buyback yield while ignoring all other metrics. You can easily generate some charts or statistics yourself though.
