Ethereum has improved every technical aspect of bitcoin combined with having a built in programming language for infinite versatility. You could run an election on ethereum through smart contacts and it wouldn't be possible to even claim that "the election was hacked" as you could just check the code and pseudonymous transaction list yourself. Ethereum will also be the ultimate escrow service rendering banks completely useless. Want to bet with other 4channers anonymously about what outcome topic X will have? Make a smart contract that will release the money to the winner once the outcome is settled.

The Enterprise Ethereum Alliance (Microsoft, Intel, JP Morgan, Deloitte etc) believes are currently in the process of building decentralized applications (dApps) on top of Ethereum. Some of their prototypes will be released here:

My assumption is that most people who made any serious money with BTC didn't expect to. That is, it was largely accidental. They weren't experienced with currency exchange or stocks or anything like that. They just bought a lotto ticket. As such, that inexperience is leading to an emotional unwillingness to let go of the idea that BTC is unstoppable. Meanwhile, smart money has been watching what happened with BTC alarmingly and is ready to back the next serious contender. It so happens that ETH is just that. Pic related speaks for itself. You can't look at that and say ETH is just another altcoin like Doge or Monero.

Another factor we're seeing are BTC late-adopters who perhaps bought in around $700-$800 expecting gains like the 2011 holders got. A challenger angers them, as does the notion that they're missing yet another wave. On the other hand, you really don't see a lot of hate from ETH to BTC. I think BTC was awesome and I'd kill to have bought in at current ETH prices. I don't want to see anyone lose money on it. I hope it continues to grow! But from a leverage standpoint if I have $2000 I'm interested in dipping into crypto, does it make more sense to buy 1.5 BTC or 100 ETH? I don't share the emotional attachment but I'm trying to rationalize it.
