>Clearing firms employ DTCC to fund this instant money flow as the original transfer takes ~2 business days to fulfil, for which the clearing firms usually pay around 1 to 3 % in interest in collateral on the notional value of the share
>so for two days the clearing firm is 2% of the stocks value in cash lighter
>when stocks go volatile this % is increased, as the volatility implies a higher risk of the buyer not being able to pay (think Melvin) for which the clearing firm would pay the price (hopefully getting their money back from Melvin later on)

>GME shares are exchanged hands billions of times a day; clearing firms are not well capitalized enough to be able fork over the hundreds of billions of dollars in collateral
