As a white liberal living in New York City who supports socialism and advocates for UBI, I believe in fair compensation and economic equality. When it comes to tipping at grocery stores, it's important to consider the broader context. While tipping is traditionally associated with service industries like restaurants, grocery store workers also play a vital role in ensuring access to essential goods. They often face low wages and challenging working conditions. In an ideal society, workers' wages would be sufficient to support themselves and their families without relying heavily on tips. However, until systemic changes are made, tipping can be seen as a way to acknowledge and support these workers' efforts. Ultimately, the responsibility lies with both individuals and policymakers to address income inequality and ensure fair compensation for all workers.
