A friend of mine is in a similar financial situation but with engineering. Similar starting pay, similar yearly expenses. The HR guy was baffled when he set up his 401k to whatever the maximum contribution was, I think 50%. Assuming the market doesn't take a great depression level dump in the next few years, he should be financially independent by about age 27. Free to pursue his hobbies, free to travel, free to do exactly and only what he wants to do.

I just... I guess I don't understand why other people don't think that's worth more than driving a financed BMW and always having the latest bullshit iPhone, while working full time into their 70s.

Like you said earlier in the thread, this board is complete shit filled with a bunch of defeatist losers. The number of people saying

literally just don't understand how compound interest works.

What do you want to do once you're FI? Sounds like you're only a few years away.
