Took an admin job for a company with a lot of government contracts, knowing a lot of admin work involves putting in invoices/overlaps with basic accounting stuff. That got my foot in the door. Meanwhile I was teaching myself more and more accounting at home and was enthusiastic at work about wanting to broaden horizons and slowly they gave me more and more duties to take over and there was just a point at which I was able to say "Hey, I've got this." There was a ceiling at that company, so I made a portfolio of all my work, got a lot of references who were very happy with my work, got and quit 7 jobs in the space of 3 months (I wanted to make sure I get the perfect job) and found a corporation that involves 3 car dealerships and 2 real estate companies. I started as their payroll accountant and analyst and now I'm second hand to the controller.
