You have to read the Golden Arc to understand exactly why, but to put it lightly, it's the best piece of fiction ever written about a man becoming an arch demon as well as the level of emotion from Guts and Casca at this betrayal. All the character development feels earned, nothing is shoehorned in. Even though this moment is well known across the internet, it doesn't punch you in the gut like it does until you read the story up to this moment.
