I read the consensus algorithm paper, thanks for the link. Here's my FUD:

Page 4: "Another class of algorithms, that we also rejected, involve electing a leader node." .. "See Section 0.3.7 [page 5] for detail."

Page 5: "Implementing the Algorithm requires to designate some nodes as block-makers. [Leaders.]"
