Dogs are selfless. Cats are selfish. I came up with this simple explanation years ago and I still can't think of a better explanation of the two animals. Your problem is that you (or lovecraft) are confusing selfishness with intelligence. It's not that the cat isn't going after the stick because it's smart, they're typically dumb as a brick tbhwy, it's that they don't give a fuck what YOU want. If they wanted to get a stick for some reason, they would. If they don't, they won't. They don't give a fuck about you. Even if they roll over and act cute, it's because they want you to rub their belly. but only for so long! Or they'll scratch and bite the shit out of you! great animals, eh? Also Toxoplasmosis.

Fucking hate cats. Bunch of smug, selfish assholes, the lot of 'em. Very few that aren't, and those are rare exceptions. Dogs on the other hand are incredibly intelligent, often capable of having actual jobs alongside humans for example. The difference is they actually care about their humans and are very giving as a result. The ones who aren't were typically abused in some way, and even those can often be turned around if they're put in a good home full of love that teaches them to trust again. They're good dogs, Brent.
