Kola was recently beaten as the deepest hole drilled by man, thats currently held by a drilling platform gas bore hole off Florida at almost 12.5 km deep. The deepest man accessible hole is Mponeng gold mine in south africa at 4.5km from the surface.

I dont know what they are, restless spirits of miners watching out for their kindred or some ancient force that wanders the depths of mines, but Tommy Knockers are real. 50% of my coworkers have seen or experienced them underground. Wandering in the depths of a forgotten mine with friends and watching a small blue light float at head level down the drift in front of you is so surreal. Or hearing men work air drills and gear just down the next section of drift only to find no one there is a strange experience.
