I don't really understand this argument. Social institutions have simply changed over the years, or other things have come to fill the economic void. White people don't go to church any more. If they are zoomers they just go to the "club" or to festivals. Boomers have their expensive boomer holidays and family events or whatever boomers spend their boomer wage on.
Otherwise, the cultural tropes like eating out or playing sports has been replaced with uber eats and gym memberships so you can look like your favourite influencer.
