It really depends on a lot of variables like how you made your money. My rule of thumb is if I didn't get a 1099 then it didn't happen. Last year I was able to hit the perfect balance of my business taking a paper loss, and my personal income being low enough to get a refund. Try to run all of your expenses through a business entity.
