Because lots of things I previously thought were absolutely absurd ended up being true, and if you consider the level of evil in the world that actually exists, then some version of this isn't too far off being plausible. They did experiments with extreme sensory deprivation and people start to go insane with no stimulation in a matter of days. Drugs and degeneracy have been pedaled as population control since drugs and alcohol existed. We can clone sheep, and if you don't think there are super gnarly medical experiments being conducted by insane people who want to find a way to live as long as possible then you should probably look into it.

Psychos have been locking people in basements for various reasons since basements were a thing. Before basements it was probably caves. There exist people who derive great pleasure from suffering. That pasta is obviously a work of fiction creatively taking concepts like these to their logical conclusions.
