Even with coins, the silver content doesn't have to be .999, and the coins don't have to be 1 oz. And then there's copper, to fill in the lower denominations. Pic (92% copper) was in circulation in the 70's and 80's, and it was equivalent to about $2 back then, as the conversion rate at the time was approximately $1 = 5 Francs.

Krugerrands only have like 8% copper. Here's an actual giant penny made of 92% copper.

It's not good to buy copper coins from dealers in any large quantity. But buying a few collectibles for fun is ok. They don't cost nearly as much as silver collectibles, so it leaves you a lot more money to stack what counts.
Pic was a common 92% copper coin in circulation during the 70's and 80's.

Yeah they're nice and chonky, reminds me of these old coins from the 70's and 80's. Used to be my favorite coin as a kid, and they're made of 92% copper so have some small value. There was apparently also a .925 silver version, but it must be extremely rare because I've never seen one, ever. Uh yeah I just checked, they were only minted in the hundreds!
