Official is the keyword here, reality is we've no idea since the US treasury refuse audits of their gold reserves since decades. And as far as i'm concerned, real reserves could be super low, super high (unlikely) or totally fake.
Remember the 5700 400oz bars sold to China in 2009 who happened to be tungsten bars coated with gold? When investigated, the tracking numbers found the bars to be originated from fort knox..
Thid kind of (((accident))) could start a war. And i wouldn't be surprised if we discover that a good chunk of the gold traded internationally (the 400oz standards between countries) is just fancy looking tungsten. And they get passed on like hot potatoes, with the intelligence agencies of most countries all knowing very well what's up but playing the fool's game to be sure to not be the last ones handling the chocolate bars when the info is out in the open.
