If you were wanting to introduce a gold backed monetary union, it would be unfair to nations without much gold in comparison to the size of their economy. You could avoid this by getting everyone on the same page about stocking up on gold before the switch.

The issue is that the fiat systems can outcompete sound money over the short/medium term. It's like doing meth to clean your house faster, it works but you'll pay the price later.
