Went to eviction court today. Non-trivial chance it's just a humiliation ritual. They raised our rate 20% for June, and then another 20% for July because of the month-to-month fee. There are no apartments in this county or any surrounding it with our old rent. They wont negotiate something reasonable. We know that they're having trouble finding tenants, people are moving out, etc. They're trying to pump the ones who stay for everything we have.
There's evidence of price-fixing, but no one will listen because all the people with power rely on the rent-seeking to shore up their bad financial decisions. The landlord's rep was saying that she's sorry that the hikes are hard on people, but that times are tough for property owners too, and it occurred to me that the most generous read of that is that they overleveraged on shit investments during COVID and literally need to raise rents to the breaking point or they'll get rugpulled too.
On that note, I'm starting to think that we need to go after them. Not landlords, their counsel. If you make it an absolutely awful experience for those who represent landlords, either they'll get left without it and on a level playing field with tenants, or have to pay ruinous fees.
In any case, I'm kicking myself for not just purchasing a townhouse before the pandemic. Spend the money I wasted on botched medical treatment on a down payment and be sipping tea on in MY living room with a sub-$1500 monthly instead of $2k in rent.
