Possibly as much as this:
https://www.jmbullion.com/2023-3-oz-black-proof-cook-islands-silver-cyber-queen-coin/
I would love to photograph that, but I've shelled out $250 retail for a coin that I later saw go for half that on ebay. I'm not sticking my neck out that far again.

>SO many better coins you can get for $300
Arguably, if subjectively, true.

Sometimes a piece just speaks to you, and you have to get it.

>$400 for that ounce.
Yep. You have to really want it, or have faith in its numismatic potential.

>at the current prices.
You see it! As spot prices climb, I have not seen the really pricey coins' prices go up. So maybe when things get expensive, bite the bullet and get the high-premium coins?

My other really, really big concern is, that Coral Sea and pic related may be considered "Cinderella" coins, ala stamp collecting. There are countries (islands) that make stamps that will clearly never be used for postage, and real collectors spurn them. Will that happen with the extra value on these island nation coins?

And will their value go up after they get swamped by rising sea levels?

"Soulless" is a bit harsh. I think generic-only is a bit short-sighted and optimistic - basically greedy. I get the feeling they are banking on prices skyrocketing. The extra premiums for real (or even Cinderalla) coins are perceived as wasted on the ethereal concept of numismatic value.

OTOH, I have made some purchases of coins I know will never bring enough return to break even in my lifetime, but they were too pretty or unusual to pass up. But I've 'made it', and am not overly concerned about profit.

You paid for a box enclosing a run-of-the-mill silver bullion coin from Ching Chong. The box will provide a profitable return only if you sell to a(nother) fool.
Not to say I'm guiltless in the overpayment department.

Discovered something odd...
This Cook Island coin does not have its element, mass, or purity stamped anywhere on it, anywhere.
inb4 the edge - I looked there, too.
And it is not an inexpensive coin.

So... here's that mummy coin from Niue. The obverse has a black coating darker than any I've seen so far. The sarcophagus sticks out almost a full coin height again.
