The trend is for people to leave cold states with no economic prospects for warm states with slightly better economic prospects.

COVID was part of it, but the a lot of these Midwest towns don't have the jobs anymore. Millennials went to school and when they graduated they got better job offers in other parts of the country. It's called the "brain drain" here and is well documented.

Large corporations are to blame - they gave the jobs to H1b workers and the suburbs that were 90% white 20 years ago are now littered with Asians. Boomers were the last people who lived good lives here, the only people left are Gen X rejects.
