It is truth that retardation as a barrier attracts more retardation (See: pol), but things that keep people away from a site either due to psychological reasons (fear/disgust/disinterest, who is this "4chan"?), difficulty in finding location (/smg/ on biz), or paywall (See: Something Awful)

all foster a more high knit community than a site that encourages you to mingle with all peoples (Facebook).
It devalues a member as a fully fleshed out character, and turns them more into a body.

There's value in the diversity of "method of contact", as it can make for more interesting interactions to know a small group versus a massive tide.
I think that's why I like /smg/ so much, is because in the sea of anonymous boards where I can ask anything and get replies to the topic at hand, here it seems like people winning and losing, and I want everybody to make it.
