LOL, I've complained about this so much on /sci/. Fuck engineering and engineering students. My biggest regret is that I took an engineering degree.

My perception is that normies vaguely know what an engineer does (as opposed to investment banking / management consulting where even uni grads may not have an idea) so they think it's a path to riches (not medicine because "omg so much studying"). They're dumb pleb normies, they think Calc 2 is a conspiracy to make them fail university, and they srsly think engineers get paid good money.

I say fuck all of them, but obviously only the stuck up ones. The laughable thing is that, at universities where ALL the students enter as equally smart (oxbridge, Ivies etc), engineering has ZERO (0) reputation for being difficult. Maybe more donkey work...but not more difficult. Only dumb normies who go to crap universities (with a wider variation in the intelligence of the student body) think they're special. I guess in the USA, with the most university student saturated culture in the world, packed with people taking business / finance / social science degrees (not that I disrespect most of them), the dumb pleb normies think they're really really smart in comparison.

Also the actual job doesn't need Einsteins. If you went to a good uni, the stuff you did in your degree should be much more theoretical than anything you'll see in your entire career. I don't understand this focus on "chartered engineers". Wow, some guy with more experience is better at his job than a new graduate. woop dee doo. It's just protectionism mates, a sign of insecurity. Einstein and Dirac and Schrodinger didn't need to invent a "Charted Physicist" club to protect their jobs...they were just really fukin smart. OK, the engineering industry, requires boring safety regulations that have something to do with it, but they're still shit. If you become a programmer at Google then you still have to outcompete the autistic savant 10 year old programming prodigies.
