I asked this question on /g/ but didn't really get answer, it's a blockchain question.
For BTC, what guarantees that a single blockchain emerges ?
I understand that miners create new block and that other nodes validate them and add them to the chain.
But what happens if for instance 2 miners generate a block at the same time, or if the network is fucked up temporarily and split in two? Then half the nodes get a correctly mined block and the other half too. How does it correct itself into forming a single clean chain of block?
The only "fix" I've heard is that you're supposed to consider the longest chain, but how is that even possible ? For once, you could have several chains growing in parallel. And also, you can only know where the longest chain is after some time. Basically it seems there is no real way to reach a consensus for what the "official" chain should be
