If people don't think a company is worth the market cap, they are more likely to sell. Its a good way of estimating future values and target values. Basically, its just one of the many many factors into deciding if someone wants to buy or sell at a specific price.
For example, Tesla was only valued at 40 billion a few months ago, now its valued at 400 billion. However, do you think its value should be higher or lower? I believe its worth at least 1 trillion, so at the current price of $400, it would need to reach $800. Therefore one might say it is worth buying TSLA up until that price.
