The reason Europeans went for the New World in the first place was massive debts from a long tradition kicking the shit out of each other. (First they were looking for a back door to the resource rich East, then they saw an opportunity to exploit the land they found.)
Empire was a band aid that didn't help the European learn their lesson, which was to stop kicking the shit out of each other.
Eventually they kicked each other in the face so hard that everything fell apart, no empire and completely at the mercy of the US and the USSR.
But now, with the occasional spasmodic nod to its past, Europe is beginning to heal itself, and the vengeance it will reap upon the rest of the World will not go unnoticed by the fat, ugly, muttrace of Ameristan.
