The premium is the difference between spot price and the price a coin/round/bar sells for. Some of it is production costs (creating a blank, striking it) some is incidental (shipping, retail overhead) and some of it is just demand.
To make things more complex, when you go to sell, you may be able to demand a premium for some things like ASE's that you won't get for, say, a generic round.

Couple reasons. Stupid premiums made other coins more attractive which reduced demand for ASE's. Demand for silver overall has reduced as the banking crisis cooled off. The mint has also raised production in the past few months.

>buy some gold as a hedge
It's just money, simple as. I trade my fiat toilet paper for real money (gold and silver) that will never expire or be devalued or have a "currency crisis". These metals are my savings account, period. I'm not going to later on exchange for new currency, except to the extent that I need to in order to survive. I've already been stocking lots of canned food, firewood, and other supplies.
I don't care if silver moons or doesn't. I have money, real money. That's what matters.

Go treasure hunting in old roman stomping grounds with a metal detector. Don't report your massive hoard of gold findings to anyone. Good luck!

Same. Practically the only way I buy bullion except one shop that takes paper checks.

I don't *hate* them. I just like other, similarly priced, coins better (Brits, Krugs)
